Project T.U.P.H.

Project T.U.P.H. (Tobacco-Use in Public Housing) is a comprehensive, 12-month program developed to engage a minimum of 200 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 from Wards 5 - 8 to influence policy development for smoke-free public housing in the District of Columbia (DC). Working towards the development of policy that limits places where persons can smoke supports the "Don't Smoke" arm of the 10 Healthy Living Tips suggested by the DOH Live Well DC initiative. Project T.U.P.H. is composed of three, 5-session workshop series that stands on the foundation of a three tier concept: LEARN, DEVELOP, and EXECUTE.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Once a year, CMS hosts an event in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This year the event was held on February 7 in ward 8 at the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC). This year's theme was a Celebration of the Arts and included a mini health fair and talent showcase with guest appearances from DC Director of Health, DC Director of HAHSTA, and radio personality Big Tigger of Rubber Revolution. There were over 200 people in attendance obtaining information from nearly 15 community based organizations. As a result of this event and promotional tour, 45 youth were tested for HIV/AIDS.

Community Health Fairs

CMS participates in community health fairs on a rolling basis. During the health fairs, we distribute health/disease-state brochures, provide brown bag medication counseling, blood pressure monitoring, free condoms, and occasionally condom negotiation skill workshops.

COM SMART: HIV/STD Prevention Program

This prevention program has been adapted from a Diffusion of Effective Behavioral Interventions (DEBI) program titled VOICES/VOCES. This program is a small group, 45-minute, one time intervention that is designed to encourage condom use and improve condom negotiation skills.

Pharmacy Education

CMS provides opportunities for both pharmacists and medical doctors to receive continuing education credits in an array of health topic areas. We also precept pharmacy students in their last year of pharmacy school - providing learning opportunities in nonprofit management, HIV/AIDS and other health topics, presentation skills, and much more.
